The Bombay High Court on Wednesday ordered that all IPL matches after April 30 should be shifted outside Maharashtra, after allegations that the drought-affected state cannot afford to waste water on cricket pitches.
Matches scheduled until April 30 can, however, be held in the state, the court said, adding it could not afford to ignore the plight of people.
As many as 13 IPL matches, including the final at Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium on May 29, will have to be shifted.
The court was hearing a petition filed by an NGO which claimed that 60 lakh litres of water is proposed to be used for maintaining cricket pitches in the three venues that will host IPL matches in Maharashtra, namely Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur.
The Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) had told the court on Tuesday it would use water from its sewage treatment plant for maintenance of pitches but shifting matches will be “unfair”.
